Wow, okay so a lot has happened since the awesomeness of the Portfolio Show...

The show was great, I felt like I really stood out the way that I needed to. I didn't when Best In Show -__- , not even Outstanding Contribution to the Industry -__- .... But I brushed that off and just focused on proving myself. I think I had a lot of great interests throughout the day. I learned so much just by hearing myself and what people had to say about my work. Definitely a needed experience, just wish the school gave more time or more dates to tell everyone "hey, stop what you're doing and look at the graduates". I think something like would be beneficial on both parties. I didn't necessarily snag a job at the show, but i didn't expect to.

Luckily I was confident enough to expect not to get a job at the show, but me to keep doing my thing and develop on my own. So that meaning that I moved back home to Anderson, South Carolina... Sadly, this did nothing for my career because I didn't get much work done. So for a month in Anderson, then coming back to Atlanta for SIEGE, I had nothing more then the "okay" portfolio I had in my show. But I guess it was okay, because I came to SIEGE marketing myself and my skills more than my projects.

Now the awesomeness that was SIEGE... I will always love SIEGE for what it means, what it did for the industry, what it's doing for my career, and what it's doing for my love of life. There are so many reasons why and how I enjoyed myself this year. There was definitely more people than last year. More studios, more students, more volunteers throughout the weekend. So that means get to enjoy the relationships I've made in the past with drinks and discussions, and I'm blessed to create new relationships with new "powerful" and awesome people in this industry. I'm talking first name basis with these people, which you can't beat. I was the Speaker Liaison again this year, and I put me in front people and professionals that came to love me, understand me, and could educate me. And I need everyone to understand that all of that greatness was only half of it. The other half is the FUN and amount of it through the whole thing. The goodies, the prizes, the FOOD, the (professionally inspired) alcohol, the girls, the atmosphere, the parties, and the friends are really something that I would just attend just to have.

Such a great experience. I have pictures and videos lol on my facebook page, so check those out. I'm crossing my fingers at a couple of job opportunities as well. So all in all, I love SIEGE, love my life, and love my industry. Honestly, I appreciate my start into this field and hopefully making all the right moves. Live and love is what it's all about, and I can't do it alone. Thanks

HEY... It's about time I can say these words "I am a college graduate!!". Tomorrow is the portfolio show where I well be side by side with my peers as we display our professional pieces to friends, family, and employers. It's taken 4 1/4 years for me to receive a bachelor's degree in Game Art and Design. It was an awesome ride. I met some great friends and great professionals. Now it's time to drop the student title and adopt my professional title.

I've learned a lot about life, this industry, and myself, so now I get to share it with the world. I don't know what will happen tomorrow, I'm not expecting much. I am however expecting me to be on my game (all puns intended) and meet new professional interests and friends, even clients... :D

I'm really excited... My work is maybe half of what I wanted it to be by this time 2 years ago. However lack of time, money, and more time, I'm kind of not where I wanted to be. On the other hand, I understand this is just a stepping stone and not the peak of my career. I do believe I'm shinning and standing out enough amongst my friends (which was important for me), even much so I hope I get the title of Best In Show.

So now officially starts the professional version of my blog and life. I'm all grown up now mom and dad :) Thanks to everyone who's been in my life and everyone who's supported me. One chapter closed... Another opened

Okay so I finished the Game Demo Reel.... At least the first pass, I might update my games and rerecord the reel for tweaking... And I can finally unveil my final business card. I mostly been working on this game ABZ's for the past week... I thought about uploaded pics, but just rather wait. As of now I've updated my website, demo reel, resume, and business card. I don't want to show off my card yet, cause it's kinda special and I don't want any copycaters before the portfolio show ;)... and the reel isn't where I want it still, but I guess it's more of a finished draft than the last one.

Finally uploaded this latest version of my game Vector Art... Update the art and gradient a little. However I still have a long way to go with it. Added a couple more levels and got the death working. Also was working on this new mechanic, switching bodies... Still didn't main a level menu and a timing system, but that's the next step.

Between Worlds Design

So I was suppose to upload these so long ago. These are some of the drafts from the project I did for the "Between Worlds" dance. Moving in the Spirit is the organization that put the play/dance together and it was pretty cool. I loved working these people, like a lot. They teach 3yr old's to 18 and up groups and classes dance and christian values. They put together a pretty awesome show with a great story and message. It was pretty awesome watching and holding the program I designed in my hand.

So it starts with my original concept... and these are only a few but it then works it's way to redoing the idea and coming back with different colors and a different style... and it ends with a few of the inside background pages, the final JPG, and it in my hand :)

Okay so I've actually been doing some stuff without even posting about them.... sooooo I guess I can spill it to help me post it faster lol. I finished the Alpha.6 version of my game Vector Art and uploaded it to Kongregate.com. Encountered some interesting first experiences, but it making me a better developer right.

A small kind of "personal challenge" I started working on was a game called Grumpy Faces. I decided I want to focus on showing my game developer skills so I started thinking of ways to make small published games. This game is just the challenge mode of it's full version, but if it's fun and playable it might score me points.

I've been slacking on making videos of my other levels in Unreal because my school changed its version. So I have to install my version on my hard drive and run it at the school because my computer is to slow for good quality.

In class I'm working on my Google Sites webpage... I really wanted to create my own, but I'm running out of time and must work with what I have.

Hopefully I'll be able to show a lot more art (comic pages, concept art, coloring) on my blog and website because I still want 2d art to be a part of my portfolio. I can't work on anything now because I'm swamped with my 3d work that I'm behind on.

I still must finish my Card design... finish at least the Beta of Vector Art by wednesday... Start working on Links by Thursday... and Start working on 6 Sides again in about a week...

Wow... so it's been too long since I posted anything. Good news is I pasted both of my classes and next quarter, will be MY LASTTTTT. I'll be in Portfolio class, so I'm trying to work on my stuff before I actually get in there.

I do have a game plan... Working on a Unity Game, two levels in Unity and my level/game in Unreal... Should be fun and interesting. But I actually have pictures and projects now I can post up, just been kinda busy. Oh right... also trying to finish some comics samples to throw into my reel. But like I, I have this whole summer break to work on everything. Not enough time, smh let's get started...

Okay so the client looked at the previous character sheet and had a lot of things to say. Hopefully this time is more of what they had in mind. First the character is suppose to look more like a thumb (so i also scratched the arms and legs). Since it is suppose to look like it's part of a hand, the bottom isn't really suppose to be defined. So this was really the hardest part, coming up with a way to "fade out" the character.

Other things were mentioned as well like "T" symbol more like Superman's, the red color more bright, play with the eyes, and I was missing a mask last time. So this is the updated Super Thumb sheet.

Okay this is cool... I'm hoping to obtain this contracting job for perhaps a long term children's comic. I had to design and illustration their character and use it in the comics they write. It sounds pretty promising and hope they think of me as a good illustrator :D

Okay so I’m a senior and my degree is in Game Art and >>Design<<. My last couple of years I’ve realized my interests are in game design, however I’m one of few and this degree, school, and teachers seem to push us students into the art track. I’ve noticed and raised questions myself about what design is and how to obtain it, and a lot of my teachers seem to have a traditional perspective of it.

Because I know what I want to call myself when I graduate, I’m on a path to learn, understand, and teach myself traits of a designer. This helps so much, and I can’t wait until I can pull my wait in this battle and get this problem fixed.

It's about time I'm doing this. This is the game that my team made last Global Game Jam. We had an awesome team, we were already all friends. 48 hours is rough, but I think we could and should flush this game out to be something really cool. Questionable Design

Ugh... this design stuff is annoying at times. There are only so many ways to make a game, true or false? The reason I wanted to start designing game is because I always found something different I would do with a title. I got in to indie games because they were so perfect and showed more opportunity for originality. I can't stand seeing games that look a like or give me the same feeling that I've felt before. But really, who's to say what copied what. Everything nowadays are blending so much together.

Every first person shooter is a copy of another one, true or false? The only thing that differs is the interface and the story. Every platform has a beginning point and an end point. Every fighter is your party verses my party. What does game design really mean, and why does it get applied to some and not others...

A game that is fun and keeps you playing is the only thing that matters, true or false? Does it even matter at times? Casual games are notorious for that. I wish I had a little more science on the theory of game design. It really interests me because of it's "make your own definition" factor. But again, that makes it all the more difficult... Ugh, where's my mentor at?...

Okay so this a game idea that I had to build a level for. I don't know if I'm going to continue the game, but I still liked the concept and design style. The story is kind of based off of "I am Legend", hence the name. However the concept is that you play as a robot and see the world in an altered 2d perspective. It's during the apocalypse and you have the ability to keep finding, building, and changing robot bodies to develop through the story.

More Growth

So it's been too long since my last post. I've been modifying my theme, approach, and overall idea for my portfolio. I still technically haven't chosen one single logo for everything, so I'm kinda flying with the one(s) that I have. I can't wait until I finalize my resume, card, and theme. Seeing my own brand on so much good work would make all my experiences worth it.

I've always had a plan from day one, but not really goals to shoot for. Over the course of my years in college, I've been refining my goals and updating my game plan everyday. I'm really proud that I can stand up for myself when it comes to my future. I know too many of my peers that listen or wait for someone else (i.e. teachers and each other ) to tell them how to plan and present their career and professional experience, which yeah, doesn't make sense.

But anyway, I'm thankful for the blessings I've been given and plan on using them to the fullest. It's just sometimes, I'm tired of always planning and not doing... It's been getting to me for a long time. When I was in high school, I was so excited and eager to learn how to use my talents because I knew that was the only thing stopping me, and I would take advantage as soon as I could. Here it is, over 2 years since I learned what I needed and started "taking off" like I promised myself I would. I'm moving slow but I can't complain as long as I'm moving forward, right. A learning experience came with all of that, not just of my profession but of myself. This is why I expect superior awesomeness out of myself everyday I wake up. I become disappointed in myself a lot when I don't deliver, cause's their's no one out there that can come down on me harder than myself. But I know I can shine above my peers somehow, now I have to prove it to myself.

6 Sides Global Illumination

I was having some trouble with getting the proper lighting that I wanted. So I just wanted to play around with different lighting possibilities to get good enough results... First is me comparing my cube to the one I had used in Unreal.

This is how the lighting looked originally.

This is with a light right above the cracks of the boxes... see how it's still really black.

This is with Global Illumination turned on... It helped out sooo much, even though the cracks were still darker than I wanted.

This is the Global Illumination with out the direct light above. Not bad, just really grey.

I decided to definitely keep the global illumination in and use the lights where ever I feel it's necessary.

6 Sides- Block Testing

Before starting to build this level, I figured I need to create my most important asset. These blocks that the level will be filled with I need to make sure it's the right size to be easily tiled, unreal grid friendly, and most important the proper jump range for the puzzles.

After making the test sizes in unreal out of BSP, the next step is to create a static mesh the exact size to match unreal's BSP. Then I Imported that into unreal and made the default grey texture for the game.

So here's the deal, now I actually need my blog for class so hopefully I'll be prone to actually posting faster. I'm a Level/Game Designer in my Pre-Portfolio class, so I'll be concentrating on design, and even try to sneak some 2d somewhere.... like concept.

This first project is very different from whats been done because of it's simplicity. I want to concentrate on the level design and for class, I'll probably be building it in UDK, to be faster. However I designed and themed the game separate enough to where when I have some time, I can put it in UDK moble (because we have it now) or Unity (of course) and make it official. This is the first step of my project, it's a little late but here are some references.

I meant to also be posting some walk-throughs of a test area but it had a problem saving so the next thing I would post would be the actually level design... I have less than 3 weeks to finish it, wish me luck.

Man... I'm near the home stretch. I really didn't mean to take so long to post, but so much has been ahappening. I ment to post about how school ended and show what I did, and post where career decisions have been taking me. Nothing necessarily tangible, but a lot of mental growth has occurred over the break.

I started this blog of course so I can show someone online the little talent that I do have, but also so myself and others can witness my own personal growth, not just in my work but in my decisions, opportunities, and thought process. I think it's becoming a success and will be a prominent piece in my career. I'm glad I started it when I did and will recommend everyone getting one. Growing is one of the most important qualities of living, and I really like looking back every now and then.

This quarter I'm in pre-portforlio class and hopefully will convince my teacher that I can make a living out of the little pieces of these industries that I love to do. With my teacher on board, I'd be able to do my personal work in the class room which would almost guarantee my work to get done. I've been having a problem the last couple of months of wanting to either do 2d work or 3d work. So I've been painfully doing both, inside class is 3d and game stuff, and outside it's comic and concept. Even though I've realize I draw to the 2d talents of mine, I'm in the Game Art and Design program, so I have to concentrate on 3d. I may go into detail about me and this struggle someday, but hopefully I've found a happy medium.

Random Logo

So I was just looking at my friend's design entry of an "R" for a logo contest, and it got me thinking about entering my own submission. But be too lazy to put that much thought into it for someone else, I decided to scrap the whole idea. However I started playing with shapes and juxtapositions in my head for this "R" just because, and it's still my initial. Long story short, I hopped in Photoshop and rendered this, this composition in the middle of the night and decided to use it as a potential logo of mine =D

And this is playing with the concept. I like the "vector"ness of it and how it allowed me to have multiple schemes. I got a chance to play with the color schemes and palettes, also using different effects.

I'll probably use the "vector"ness as a start and go back on top with more effects, shapes, or just something to make it stand out... Hmm

I really love the raw talent and conceptual visualization of concept art. It's something I plan on experimenting with further before I graduate. This is an attempt at a style, I really had fun with it. It's not done, but honestly I might leave it like that because thats the awesome thing about concept art. I'll save the polishing for concept pieces that I want to complete.

What's new

I can't wait for the holidays, it is and has always been my favorite time of year. Food, Family, and Fun all the time. And the is year might mean a little more to me.

These pass few weeks have been a little eventful but let me tell you what I got out of it. First, I now have access to Digital Tutors tutorials and The Gnomon Workshop tutorials. I'm learning a great deal everyday, I really recommend them. Next, this week was the last week of my internship with World Touch Gaming. It was definitely an experience that I'd recommend to anyone who's interested in asset modeling or a complete game pipeline.

Last, I only have three quarter left until I graduate. Hopefully I'm setting up my classes right and won't fail anything this quarter. If it goes well, then I only have two classes at night next quarter. That means I'll have AMPULE opportunity to work on my own stuff... All my games, all my novels, all my portfolio work... And I'm not picking up anymore responsibilities.

I'm really focusing on cherishing what I have right now, in more ways than one. That includes my future and my time. I really just don't want to take or use anymore excuses, people are going to know I'm serious...

PhoeniCon 2010 !!

PhoeniCon was awesome this year you guys... I really see this conference going somewhere, or at least those apart of it going somewhere. We might not have the biggest names here in Atlanta, but we do got some of the coolest people in the industries. I really feel the love in the industry, and no doubt that there's a future in it.

Some of the names we had this year was Jai Husband, Terminus Media, N4D, Andrew Greenburg, SamFlax, and some friends of mine from the industry.

These are just a few example of what I've done more recently in photoshop. First, some of the little graphics and flyers I did for US Gaming Arena. The rest are just a few things I found on my computer that I felt like showing.

These are a few works in progress, a comic page from Ezekiel that I love (even though not finished) and a new idea of mine for a graphic novel. That last pictures are another level I was working on for class, still not finished but here's the progress thus far.

SIEGE 2010

HeyHeyHey... SIEGE was totally awesome this year. We all did a great job of putting it on and making sure it ran smooth. There were over 1000 people there including high schools for the college fair, almost 200 speakers, and so many volunteers. We had full days of networking, learning, and asking questions followed by nights of major parting!! The awesome thing about the parties they were they best places to network and talk about the industry and job market. Of course I did that and ate as much as I could.

SIEGE is really something that will be around and continue growing and helping our industry. That fact that I was Speaker Liaison helped me out so much, just because I had so many one on one's with everyone I wanted.

Plus the only thing like that we have in atlanta thats focused on learning is PhoeniCon... :) which I believe is gonna be as big as SIEGE one day. It just takes a lot of commitment. SIEGE really felt like an actually conference this year, one that everyone goes to, stays, and learns something from. Can't wait until next time.

I need my time back

Okay so this quarter is over, thankfully, however my time is still my time isn't back yet. I'm still in my internship, going strong with that... almost moving a little too slow. I really have some cool friends with talent. I always seem to be the guy who is good at getting other people a job, because I never really showcase my work or ability well.

I hate that, I've always known I had this talent but I can't sit and finish something to show off. Not even finish, like I seem to be too busy to even be creative. I really can't wait until my time is freed up. I know I have a lot to give the world, now I'm the only one that's getting in the way of that...

Next Three Months

Wow you guys... talk about busy. How did I just get like crazy blessed all at the same time. I'm not sure if I've ever been this loaded with titles and things to do.

First, I finally got this job at the US Gaming Arena. I'm the Marketing Rep, and I get paid on commission. So that means I have to go out and hustle so I can get paid (not that I'm not use to that).
Second, I got an Internship (which is like impossible in Atlanta) with World Touch Gaming. Me and 4 others are going to be developing the art, graphics, and effects for two casino games.
Third, I'm finally in the classes that I been wanting to be in since forever, Level Design. Since I want to call myself a Level Designer, I'm really trying to focus on the class and project. Plus the other classes will help advance my skills.
Fourth, I'm the Speaker Liaison for the SIEGE conference here in Atlanta. I'll be handling all the speakers coming to the conference, and well be their go-to-guy in person.
Fifth, I'm the Event Coordinator for AIA's PhoeniCon, and that has to be better than last year's. It's so much fun organizing your own conference.
Sixth, I want to start development on this game with my partner to enter it into the IGF competition. I really want to do one this year, because next year would be last year entering as a student.

Phew... and that doesn't include anything on the side. The problem with having all of that right now is they all (minus the job) have roughly the same deadlines. My internship is over on Oct 17th, same as the deadline for the IGF main competition. My classes end middle of Sept, SIEGE is 2 weeks after that, and PhoeniCon is 2 weeks after that... So yeah, the next 3 months is going to be crazy (like impossible crazy, too bad I don't believe in impossible(not to sound chessy lol)). However if I survive (with no money by the way), I'll be expecting a crown for the king of awesomeness.

My First Level Finally

I finally had a class that taught me Unreal. The project was to build a simple room-level with an effect, sound, and a Kismet effect. My Kismet was the flickering light and sound that you can't see from the pics. This is a walk-through of the first draft. I still have a lot of assets to add and there textures, along with some cool particles. I'm real big on mood, lighting, and style when it comes to making a level, can't wait till I finish it.

This is a character I'm working on for a game. His detail did't need to be that obsessive, but I was modeling him for my first Zbrush class. There is a lot of work I still have to do to the anatomy, not including the gear. However I still think he looks pretty cool coming from a non-character modeler.

Hey peoplez, I know it's been a while. I'm about to upload some stuff help me in my newly obtained internship... That's right I just got a internship at World Touch Gaming, hopefully I'll be uploading some of my work for that. Also I've been working at the US Gaming Arena (usgamingarena.com). It's the biggest Gaming Lan Center in the south east. That job definitely been a roller coaster, but it looks like I'm finally going to be getting paid with a new position. I requested a Marketing Rep position, and now I'm doing all the flyers for the events, all the little graphics, and marketing to the surrounds interest groups. So yeah, I've been a little busy, and it seems to have paid off a little bit :)

For you guys that don't know, I've been the event coordinator for a student conference at the Art Institute of Atlanta. Phoeni-Con was the first media arts conference that the school has ever had, and it was a huge success. We had a lot of fun, made connections, and learned a lot. This year's con is going to be so much bigger. The event is open to every school and student that's willing to learn about Games, Animation, or Comics. Phoeni-Con's the greatest and 100% free. Why would anyone not come, if they were serious about what they do??

Hey people I finally found some time to render out some images, and even did some "fancy" stuff in Photoshop. I really needed to post some 3d examples up so sorry for the poor quality, I'll have better stuff later. These are a couple of low poly assets and projects that are still in progress, I'll turn these pictures into concept art for the final models.

Hey pplz... I finally finished my classes this quarter and now I just have to stop being lazy and render some images of my work. I'm going to be working on a game during my break. My goal is to make it to the IGF (International Game Fest) at next years GDC (Game Developer's Conference). I think having my school AIA sponsor me would be super credible, and of course if I make an uber game it would definitely launch my career.

Which is another thing... I'm considering attending SCAD for a MFA in Sequential Art. It would definitely help the writer, graphic novelist, and motion comic developer in me but also I think it will help my game design career because of all of the mission mapping, scenario building, puzzle making, and plot designing.

I love my career...

Hey Hey Hey... Just letting you guys know what I'm up too. I working real hard and learning new things about modeling in my classes. I'll be posting up some of my cool new models and textures. I've actually been teaching myself Unity 3d the past couple of weeks, and I'm loving it. I'm really getting my hands dirty by making models, experimenting in unity, and figuring out how to put it all together (that means programming, yay ). And since I graduate in a year or so, I'm really trying to be on my game (no pun intended lol). I'm not going to have a crappy portfolio like I've seen in past shows.

Everyone needs to be prepared for SIEGE coming up in October. Volunteers, Students, Professionals... We are all going to have a blast with the new stuff we're planning. A shout out to a mentor of mine, Andrew Greenburg, for putting me higher higher on the committee. You really have to appreciate the ones who continually open doors for you.

And of course we can't forget about my conference, PhoeniCon. The website will be up soon, I can't wait until our SECOND annual event. It's going to be bigger and better and help students get the information they need. But I'll explain in depth in another post, God Bless.

Hey my lovely few number of fans... I just started classes again and I'm finally taking the Game Modeling class... So I will have some good 3D work to show in a couple of weeks. Also I am still working on the script of Spoon, my web-series The Artist, my card game Chain Mail, and other techniques and artwork... So I'll posting that up as well.

YES got a laptop for Christmas... downloading everything!

Also I want everyone to check out and log on to Kaneva... Kaneva is a 3D environment where you and your avatar can dance in clubs, chat with friends, go shopping (in-world clothes and gifts), or just hangout at your house and watch movies on your TV...
